ADHD Shared Care Agreement

An ADHD shared care agreement is a formal arrangement where a specialist—typically a Consultant Psychiatrist—initiates and stabilises the patient’s medication, and the patient’s local NHS GP takes over routine prescribing and basic monitoring. This care is shared between the specialist and the GP, meaning that the GP is not managing the patient’s ADHD treatment alone and it is the responability of the consultant.

Madeira Medical’s Shared Care Requirements

Madeira Medical will only consider and sign an ADHD Shared Care Agreement where the agreement has been initiated by a Consultant Psychiatrist.

We are unable to accept or sign shared care agreements initiated  by a Nurse, Nurse Prescriber, or other non-Consultant practitioner.

The specialist remains responsible for the specialist management of the patient’s ADHD, including medication initiation, stabilisation, dose changes where clinically indicated, and ongoing specialist review. The GP’s role is limited to the responsibilities agreed within the shared care arrangement and in accordance with the practice’s prescribing policies.

Any request for shared care must therefore include appropriate documentation from the Consultant Psychiatrist confirming the diagnosis, medication, current stable dose, treatment plan, monitoring requirements, and the specialist’s ongoing responsibility for the patient’s ADHD care.

Madeira Medical reserves the right to decline a shared care agreement where these requirements are not met or where the practice is unable to safely undertake the proposed prescribing responsibilities.
